Zoya's father was a serf who brought game and raised sheep for the consumption of the castle in return for his being granted some lands at the edge of the city. Her family lived in a little farm until her parents fell ill and passed away, leaving just Zoya and her little brother to carry on. Zoya continued to hunt game and provide food for the castle, her brother tending the sheep and herself continuing to hunt. She also gathers herbs and makes ointments, tinctures, tonics, salves, and various medical care which has allowed her to live fairly comfortably though not near the level of royalty. Every week she brings a wagon of meat to the castle, she hunts with bow and arrow and sets snares for the smaller game and is quite adept at defending herself. Her contact with royals has been limited to providing food and transporting it to the castle, and her younger brother, Zain, is her only concern. The lad is coming on 14 now and the two of them maintain the small cabin and farm the best they can, growing their own food and surviving off the land.
